Church of Our Lady of Mercy

The parish church of Notre-Dame de la Miséricorde is located on the Place de l’Église in Propriano, southern Corsica. The history of Propriano’s Notre-Dame-de-la Miséricorde church

When Propriano was opened up by the construction of roads linking it to Ajaccio, Sartène and Bonifacio in 1848, the small chapel could no longer accommodate all the faithful. As the local population grew, the church of Notre-Dame de la Miséricorde was built between 1864 and 1881.

Three architects were involved: E. Hess in 1864, Paul Poggi in 1866 and Jean-Baptiste Brondi in 1875. Renovated in 2016, the building overlooks the village and the Gulf. Every night, it lights up and becomes a landmark, a symbol of Propriano.
